Obituary

Alfred Joseph Tinger passed away on August 27, 2012 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born on January 22, 1922 in East Chatham, NY, he was the son of the later Michael and Anna Newman Tinger. Al attended Chatham schools and went on to work at American Locomotive in Schenectady and later obtained his boiler certificate in Troy, NY. He went on to work at G. E. in Schenectady until he enlisted in the Airforce in October, 1942 in Rome, NY. He attended Air Force Technical School, Chanute Field, Illinois and in 1943 special Purpose Motor Vehicle and was assigned to 410th AAF Base stationed in England. Al received the European Service Medal and was discharged on October 30, 1944 and returned to civilian life and to work at G.E. in Pittsfield, MA as a welder until 1945. Al married Mildred Wandrei on November of 1945 in the former St. Thomas Church in Adams, MA. In 1947 he purchased and operated a barber shop in Chatham. In 1962 he and his wife "Mickey" purchased the former "Red Inn" and renamed it the Queechy Lake Inn.. In 1964 the built the Queechy Lake Motel on Queechy Lake. After much renovation the Queechy Lake Inn became a very popular dining destination. It was recognized by many food critics and was given excellent ratings, one in particular, 4 stars by Gourmet Magazine. In 1970 they purchased the Stoney Kill Restaurant in Canaan, NY. 1972 they sold the Queechy Lake Inn, Motel and package store and Stoney Kill Restaurant. In 1976 they returned to Queechy Lake Motel until selling it again in 1986. Alfred had three loving children: Alan Tinger of Canaan, NY, Linda (Jack) Franchebois of Pittsfield, MA and Paul Tinger of New Lebanon, Six grandchildren: Nicole (David) Hausmann of Canaan, Aimee (Rob) Munday of Pittsfield, Cherie (Ryan) Murach of Dalton, Andrew of East Greenbush, Lauren and Emily of New Lebanon and three great grandchildren. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mildred of 67 years. Al enjoyed the outdoors. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, American Rifle Assoc., and the Canaan Fire Company. He will be truly missed by his whole family. Calling hours will be at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham at 10:30 am on Friday, August 31st. a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon in St. James Church, interment St. James Cemetery, Ghent, NY.
