Anna Lemanska of Valatie, N.Y. passed away June 25, 2012 at Barnwell Nursing home. Born October 23, 1913 in Schenectady, NY, she was the daughter of the late Stanislaw and Eva (Grzybicka) Lemanski.
At age 20 while working at General Electric in Schenectady, as a mail girl, she began drawing and was told she had a great talent in art. She worked in the General Electric art department and then moved to NYC to attend Columbia University and develop her art to the fullest. In 1952 she toured Europe's fine art museums in France, Spain and Italy with her long time friend, Anna E. Magee. During their two month group tour they also visited the Lourdes Shrine in France, had an audience with Pope Pius the XII in Rome, and sailed to Gibraltar. Anna graduated Columbia University, NY in 1959 after attaining a BFA and an MFA. She also studied at the Arts Student League in NYC, where some of her paintings are in their permanent collection and where she was a lifetime member. As an artist she worked at Norcross Greeting Cards, but after they closed their NY location she became a freelance artist creating greeting cards, fabric designs and other commercial art, such as illustrations for book jackets. Painting was her great love, using acrylics and oils. Her canvases slowly developed from realistic portraiture to large abstracts, many in private collections.
Anna was a devout Catholic and long- time communicant at the Church of The Epiphany in NYC. She was a caring, selfless person who always put others first. She will be deeply missed.
Anna is survived by her niece, Theresa (Dalby) Argyroudis, nephews, Daniel and James Dalby, grandniece, Anna Argyroudis, grandnephew, George Argyroudis, and great-grandnephew, Vaughntele Ryan Jr.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday August 18th at 11am, at Saint James Church, Chatham, NY. Arrangements have been entrusted to the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham. For condolences visit www.frenchblasl.com.
