Obituary

Barbara C. Gitto passed away on August 21st at Pine Haven Nursing Home. Born December 18, 1931 in Plattsburgh, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Alta (Woodward) Cox. Barbara grew up in Rouses Point, where she spent summers swimming and winters ice skating on Lake Champlain. She had lots of friends who lived in the neighborhood, and when she wasn't having fun at the Lake, she and her friends would hang out in the Cox's backyard, enjoying the big playhouse Barbara's father built for her. Saturday afternoons she and her best friend Jerry would watch movies at the theater just down the street. After graduating from Rouses Point High School, she earned her home economics teaching degree from Plattsburgh State College. Barbara went on to teach at Chatham where she met the love of her life, Stephen A. Gitto, Sr. to whom she was married for 63 years. She left teaching to raise her five children. Barbara was an avid quilter, and loved to read and knit. She was a communicant of Chatham's St. James Church. In addition to her loving and devoted husband, Barbara is survived by her children Stephen Gitto, Jr., David (Ann) Gitto, Ann (Jim) Flanagan, Kathy (Chris) McMahon, and 10 grandchildren. She is predeceased by her cherished daughter, Nancy, who died at the age of 13. Our family wishes to thank all of Barbara's many caregivers over the years who cared for her at home with love, and the wonderful and attentive caregivers and staff at Pine Haven Nursing Home and the Community Hospice staff for their kindness and compassion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Barbara's name to Chatham Rescue Squad or Greenport Rescue Squad. Calling hours will be on Friday August 25th from 9am to 11:30am at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will follow in Saint James Church at Noon.
