Obituary

Betty Calhoun passed away peacefully at home on February 4 surrounded by her family, bringing to a close her long battle against non-Hodgkins lymphoma.  She was born on August 12, 1928 in Hudson Hospital to Grant and Marjorie Amelia Van Tassel.  Her life was filled with her love of family, home, travel, civic service, and her antique shop.  She graduated from Chatham High School in 1945, and married William H. Calhoun on October 4, 1947.    She and her husband Bill raised their two sons Van and Birge on the Birge Hill family farm that they loved in rural Chatham. Betty was a Cub Scout den mother, a long time member of the Chatham Women's Club, and a long time member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she played the organ and organized yearly thrift sales.    Betty was a familiar face in the civic life of Chatham, serving as a Columbia County Election Inspector for over 30 years, a member of the Chatham Zoning Board of Appeals for over 30 years, and briefly as Chatham Town Clerk.    For over 30 years, she owned and operated her Birge Hill Farm Antique Shop next to her home, and was a familiar figure in the local antiques collecting community.   Betty and her husband traveled and lived for various periods in Long Beach, Long Island; Miami, FL; Schenectady, NY; and Tariffville, CT; as well as Europe and South America in connection with her husband's job.  She especially loved the six months they lived in Florence, Italy.  They also camped throughout the U.S. with her family and friends.   She loved to walk and swim, enjoyed her gardens, and delighted in hosting the many large annual family reunions at the farm.   She is survived by her husband Bill, her sons Van Calhoun and Birge Calhoun; her daughters-in-law Sue Senecah and Maggie Calhoun; seven grandchildren, Hannah, Katrina, Mackenzie, Owen, Quinn, Will, and Zachary Calhoun; sister Jan and brother-in-law Porter Barrows and sister Patricia Briggs; several nieces and nephews; grand- and great grand-nieces and nephews; and extended family members throughout the region.   Visiting hours will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, February 7 at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home in Chatham Village. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 8 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Chatham Village.  Internment will follow at the Chatham Rural Cemetery, followed by a lunch at the Chatham Village Fire Hall.   Memorial contributions may be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad.
