Carroll R. Ruggles, “Dick”, 87, passed away on April 23, 2026, at Pine Haven Nursing Home after a short illness. Born on December 1, 1938, he was the son of George & Caroline Ruggles.

A graduate of Ichabod Crane High School, Carroll served proudly in the United States Marine Corps, embodying a spirit of honor and duty that carried through his entire life. Following his service, he built a career as an ironworker with the local union until his retirement. After retiring, he and his cherished wife, Frances moved to Maine to be closer to her family. In New Sweden, Maine, they purchased a farm where they embraced the peaceful life of rural living, which brought them great joy.

On January 19, 1963, Carroll married Frances Butler, the love of his life. Dick was not only a devoted husband but also an excellent caregiver and an unwavering source of strength for Frances during her illness. His family was paramount to him, and he took immense pride in being a rock for those he loved. Together, they traveled extensively across the United States, having lived in or visited every state except Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. This shared wanderlust created memories that enriched their decades together. He especially treasured time spent with his grandchildren, offering them kindness, support, and love.

An avid sportsman, Carroll enjoyed shooting trap until the fall before his passing. He was a long-time member of the Philmont Rod and Gun Club and traveled frequently to compete in league shoots across Columbia, Greene, and surrounding counties. He also enjoyed taking yearly winter trips to Florida, a practice he continued right up until this year.

Dick leaves behind his sons, David Ruggles and his wife Fay, and Joseph and his wife Kristen Ruggles; his grandchildren: Rachel, Steven, and Kyle Ruggles, Amber (Robert) Peabody, and Ashley Scott, Audrey Scott and Olivia Goodness, Ricky & Rylen Ruggles Desirae, Madyx and Jazmyn Peabody as well as his brother Gordon and Suzi Ruggles.
