Christine Gettman Stephenson passed away peacefully at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY, surrounded by the sounds of opera on September 6, 2016, after a short illness. She has left a tremendous void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Born on December 3, 1946, she was the only child of Theodore (Ted) Gettman and Ruth (Childs) Gettman. She spent her early years in Syracuse and Latham. She graduated from Hartwick College in 1968.
Christine (Diva) was a trained opera singer, and performed with the San Francisco Opera before moving to New York City and continuing her career there. She performed in many operas, and was a vocal coach to many aspiring singers. She also worked as a legal assistant and office manager for Stone & Stone in New York, was an assistant to the chairman of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, worked as an Executive Assistant to the President of IFS International, and was an Executive Administrative Assistant with the Carrier Corporation. She retired from COR Real Estate Developers in 2014.
Christine is survived by her daughter, Terrilyn Cohn, a grandson Tyler, and a granddaughter, Aliyah. Grandma Diva was very special to these youngsters. She is survived by a cousin, Garth (Diane), and several other cousins and many good friends.
Christine moved to North Chatham after her retirement. At the time of her death she was on the Library Board of the North Chatham Free Library. This small hamlet has opened its arms to Christine, and she has become an integral part of this community. She also worked part time at Pearson Professional Center, in Albany, and was a first reader at the Christian Science Church in Delmar, NY.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 10 at the French, Gifford, Preiter and Blasl Funeral Home; 25 Railroad Ave., Chatham, NY. 10AM-11AM will be a calling hour with the service commencing at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris' name may be made to the North Chatham Free Library; 4287 Route 203; North Chatham, NY 12132.
