Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we are sharing that Corinne A. Summers, otherwise known as Nana, has been called home to be with the Lord. Surrounded by her family, she peacefully transitioned on January 22, 2024.

She is survived by her daughter, Naomi Pitts (Micheal Moore), and son Jason (Shelly) Summers Sr, her three grandchildren, Jason Jr., Destynie, and Noah, and her two grand-dogs, Magic and Cooper. Her sister, Janice Murray, and brothers, Louis (Joanne) Van Alstyne Sr., Kemo (Priscilla) Van Alstyne, and Perry Van Alstyne.

She was the daughter of the late Mary Louise Van Alstyne-Grimes and King Johnson Sr. The sister to Mary Ellen Travis, Arlene Glover, Patricia Bates, Jackie Payne, William Van Alstyne Sr., and Charles Van Alstyne Sr., who all predeceased her.

Rev. Corinne Summers was born the eighth child out of eleven and was raised in Chatham, NY, where she attended the Chatham School District. After graduating in 1966, she attended the Albany Business College for Executive Secretarial. She was an employee for the New York State system for over 36 years and has always made friends throughout all the various departments she had worked in. She has a special knack for people, and she was always the entertainment.

She was an active long-time member of Payne A.M.E. Church in Chatham, NY. In 2000, Rev. Summers was ordained as a Local Elder, where she served on the Ministerial Staff at her church. She sang in the choir, a Missionary Society member and an Evangelist in the Albany/Kingston Area and has served as the Conference President of the Western New York Annual Conference for over 20 years. Her spirit and love for the lord was evident in all that she did within the church and the community.

In the community, she is known as "Nana" from the youngest to the oldest that know her. She was one of the best cheerleaders, when it comes to attending the grandchildren's various games. Everyone always wants to know if "Nana" is coming to the game. Even when she goes to the local grocery store, she talks with everyone that works there and gives them a hug.

The Chatham Fire Department has contacted Rev. Summers over the years to have Payne Church provide lunch for their Annual Old Timer's Luncheon. She also attended the interfaith services and has sung with other choir members within the community. And she contributes her time with the members of "God Belongs in Columbia County" as well, spreading the good news of God within the Columbia County area.

Calling hours will be on Sunday, January 28, 2024 at St. James Church, Chatham, New York. We will have a short viewing from 2-3pm, with the service starting at 3pm. Immediately following the service we invite all to join us at the Chatham Fire House.

Condolences may be conveyed at frenchblasl.com. In lieu of flowers, you can make a contribution to The Chatham Rescue Squad or The Chatham Fire House.
