Daniel Rapoport, 79, lifelong journalist, author of "Inside the House" and, founder of Farragut Publishing Co., beloved husband for nearly 48 years of Maxine Rapoport, father of Victoria, Andrew, and Adam, doting grandfather of Marlon, 4, the son of Adam Rapoport and his wife, Simone Shubuck, died in his sleep at home in East Chatham, N.Y., of leukemia on April 11.
A native of New York City, the son of Russian immigrants, and a longtime resident of Washington, Dan covered the House of Representatives for years for United Press International, and wrote for National Journal and the Washingtonian. He was a 1954 graduate of the University of Illinois, a Navy lieutenant, a winner of a Nieman Fellowship, and a diehard fan of the New York football Giants. A longtime supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union, he was writing a book at the time of death about the excesses of the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was wry, gregarious and enemy-less and was interested in everyone and everything –- the inaccuracy of lie detectors, the number of lions said to have been shipped to the Roman Coliseum, imaginative breakfasts, the workings of indoor plumbing.
Though not a native of East Chatham, for over two decades, both living there part-time, and eventually full-time, his love for the community was deep. A friend to so many, he made Chatham his home.
