David C. Kilmer

David C. Kilmer, 77, of Philmont, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, at Pine Haven Nursing Home. He was born on June 7, 1948, in Hudson, New York, to the late Ronald and Florence (Bishop) Kilmer.

David honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1973, a period that helped shape his disciplined and dedicated nature. Following his military service, he pursued a career in law enforcement as a police officer in Virginia before returning to Columbia County. There, he served the community through his work with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. Later, David applied his strong leadership skills as the manager of local IGA grocery stores, including the one in Philmont.

David's life took a dramatic turn in 1986 when he was involved in a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed. Despite this tremendous challenge, he exhibited remarkable perseverance and an indomitable spirit, making the most of each day thereafter. A man of diverse interests, David loved hot rods and passed this passion down to his son Michael. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and found joy in shooting and target practice, hobbies that brought him both excitement and camaraderie. He was a member of Columbia County ABATE.

David is survived by his devoted sons Michael (Linda) Kilmer, Loren (Kristen) Kilmer, and Anthony Kilmer, who carry forward his legacy of strength and determination. David’s family legacy extends to his cherished grandchildren Ashley, Loren Jr., Tasha, and Dora Kilmer, as well as three great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his brothers Robert (Bonnie) Kilmer and Charles (Rita) Kilmer, who remember him with affection and respect.

David was preceded in death by his brother Michael Kilmer and sister Grace Sanders.
