Obituary

Dorothy V. Dean, 88, of Chatham died on Friday March 16, 2007 at Livingston Hills nursing and Rehabilitation Center.   She was born on March 27, 1918 to Dennis and Mary Moran Toomey in Albany New York where she grew up and was educated. She married Edward Sperl  a dairy farmer and lived in Saugerties, New York.  She spent different times from Albany to Mahopac as his job responsibilities changed.  After his death she lived in Ghent, NY and worked as an Aide at the Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont, NY. She met and married Peter Deane a farmer from the Claverack area.  Shortly after their marriage they sold the farm and moved to Florida.  She was a member of the Taghkanic Senior Citizens and the Alter Rosary Society of the Church of the Holy Cross. She enjoyed sewing, making many of her own clothes; she enjoyed traveling especially with the church visiting, Hawaii, Ireland and Israel.  She truly enjoyed her home and loved making sure everything was in place. She is survived by one daughter, Janet Wolcott of Ashley Falls, MA; two sons, Edward Sperl Jr. of Chatham and Dennis Sperl Sr. of Cobleskill, NY, two sisters Kay O'Ben of Latham, NY and Jane Koun of Delmar, New York , 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was predeceased her daughter Edna Sperl and her two husbands; Edward Sperl and Peter Deane, her brothers Dennis Toomey, James Toomey, Arthur Shutter and sister Emma Helion. The family will receive friends at the French, Gifford, Preiter and Blasl Funeral Home, 25 Railroad Avenue, Chatham, NY, Monday March 19 from 6 to 8 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Gary Gelfenbien on Tuesday at Saint James Roman Catholic Church at noon.  Interment will follow at the Cedar Park Cemetery, Hudson.  For directions or to send an online condolence, visit www.frenchblasl.com.
