Elizabeth “Betty” Kutas Gaupman passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at Park Manor in Middletown, New York. She was born on May 20, 1935, in Yorkville, New York, the daughter of Martin and Bernice (Glod) Kutas.
Betty dedicated much of her professional life to the Chatham Central Schools and the Chatham Public Library. A graduate of the Albany College of Teachers, she earned a degree in Biology and taught and substituted in the Chatham Central School District for several years. She later worked at both the Chatham and Canaan branches of the public library, where she remained a familiar and welcoming presence until her retirement in 2017.
Service to her church and community was an important part of Betty’s life. She was an active member of Saint James Catholic Church and served for many years as president of the Altar Rosary Society. She was also deeply involved in 4-H, where she taught sewing and knitting to many local members and later served on the Cooperative Extension Board for several years.
Betty enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life, including reading, knitting, sewing, and gardening. She remained an avid reader until her passing and especially loved tending her garden and growing her own produce.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Herbert Gaupman.
Betty is survived by her children, Katherine (James) Littrell, Ellen Cohen, and Richard (Christine) Gaupman. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Christopher Littrell, Kirsten Littrell, and Rachel Cohen, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
A time to share memories and offer condolences with the family will be held on Friday, May 22, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM at French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, 25 Railroad Ave, Chatham, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon from St. James Church, Hudson Avenue, Chatham. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Ghent. Arrangements have been entrusted to the direction of Robert M. Donaghue, French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham.
Betty’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will forever treasure the love, guidance, kindness, and compassion she shared throughout her life.
