Obituary

Ellen Garinger Smith Scott, 95, passed away on July 19, 2019 at the Pine Haven Nursing Home in Philmont, NY after a short illness. She was born to Alpha and Phebe Garinger Smith at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital on August 13, 1923, and grew up in Richmond Hill, NY. Ellen attended Queens College, the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA, and received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University in Manhattan in 1946. She worked as a nursing supervisor, then a Professor of Nursing at Columbia University for 15 years. Ellen saw the introduction of the priceless gold powder, penicillin, which was delivered by armored car over the George Washington Bridge, and saved her in later life from a near fatal case of meningitis. Ellen completed a master's degree from New York University, and was on the verge of completing her Ph.D. in nursing education when she changed course and married Walter Douglas Scott. He was an engineer, designing power plants for ships and submarines at Newport News, VA. From there they moved to Burlington, VT where she was assistant director of the School of Nursing, UVM. In 1968 she became the Director of the Ellis Hospital School of Nursing in Schenectady, NY, retiring in 1991. Over the course of her nursing career she was responsible for maintaining high standards in nursing education, graduating over 2,000 Registered Nurses. She encouraged her students to go on to higher education which many did. She lived at her husband's family home in Fort Edward, NY and was personally presented an award from Congressman Gerald Solomon for her years of volunteer service to Washington County, NY. She served on the Board of the American Heart Association in Albany and the Baroque Music Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY. Her interests were reading and learning, space exploration, collecting Fort Edward area 19th Century Pottery which she donated to the Old Fort House Museum, raising prize winning old garden roses, flower arranging, history, playing recorders and piano, Baroque music, and bird watching. She had been a Girl Scout, member of the Schenectady Zonta Club, the Alan Devoe Bird Club, The Austerlitz Historical Society, The Schenectady Rose Society, The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), The Harvard Nurses' Health Study since its start in 1976, and numerous other organizations. She was predeceased by her husband Walter Douglas Scott, and her only sibling, a brother Warren E. Smith. She is survived by a niece and nephew, several great nieces and nephews, and many friends including Nancy Kern of Austerlitz, NY. There will be a private burial in Fort Edward, NY arranged through the French Gifford Preiter Blasl Funeral Home in Chatham, NY, followed by a later Hendrick Hudson Chapter NSDAR grave marking ceremony. Donations in her memory may be made to the Alan Devoe Bird Club, P.O. Box 20, Chatham, NY 12037.
