George R. Conklin, of Canaan died on July 27, 2006 at Hillcrest Commons Nursing Home in Pittsfield, MA. He was born April 12, 1915 in Springfield MA to James and Anna Johnson Conklin. He worked for various farms and lumbering fields as a youth, for General Electric as a crane operator during WWII and started as a breakman in the Harlem Division out of Chatham and transferred to Grand Central Station until he retired as a conductor in 1983. He was predeceased by two wives; Blanche (Dickenson) Conklin and Miriam Mohammed Conklin; his daughter, Gladys Callander of Chatham; three brothers, Warren Tyler of Palmer, MA, Francis and Henry Conklin, both of Mellenville; two sisters, Beatrice Mercer of Worthington, MA and Ethel Goss of Franklin, ME.He is survived by a sister, Gertrude Winters of Gouvenur, NY; granddaughter, Linda (Caron) and Ed Hart of Nassau; great-grandchildren; Tracy and Jeff Arno of Nassau, Michael and Karla Jean McDowell formerly of Canaan with whom he resided from 1997 until 2004, and several great-great grandchildren; Meeghan, Kylee, Bryce, and Cole Arno of Nassau and Mason Mcdowell of Kinderhook Lake.Family will receive friends Tuesday August 1st.from 10 to 10:30 am at The French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, 25 Railroad Avenue Chatham, N.Y. Interment will follow at the Cemetery of The Evergreens in New Lebanon, New York. In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Community hospice of the Berkshires in his memory.
