NASSAU, N.Y. -- Gerald Joseph Murphy, 59, of Nassau, NY died Wednesday, August 22, 2007 at his residence. He was born April 11, 1948 in Haverhill, MA the son of Joseph G. Murphy and the late Margaret (Clochecy) Murphy. Jerry was educated at St. James High School in Haverhill, received the Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Merrimack College in 1970, and the Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry from M.I.T. in 1974. Jerry joined Union Carbide Corporation in as a Research Chemist and built a distinguished 33-year career in silicone research management with companies including Witco Chemical Inc., Crompton-Knowles Corporation and General Electric. A resident of Nassau, NY since March 2007, Jerry previously resided in Hopewell Junction, NY and LaGrange, NY, where he was an active member and leader of the Hudson Valley Iris and Daylily Society. Having received his Eagle Scout Award as a young man, Jerry continued a life long commitment to scouting by serving in many leadership and supporting capacities. Throughout his life Jerry was an active member of the local parishes of Saint Columba (Hopewell Junction), Blessed Kateri (LaGrange), and Saint James (Chatham) where his devotion to music ministries led him to become a canter. Jerry is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ella Mae (Perkins) Murphy of Nassau, NY; son and daughter-in-law Michael T. and Mya Murphy of Springfield, MA; son Matthew J. Murphy and his fiancée Christine Rossitto of New Milford, CT; son and daughter-in-law Timothy F. and Erin Murphy of Highland, NY; grandchildren Liam and Isabel Murphy; siblings Barry Murphy of Haverhill, MA, Brian Murphy of Plaistow, NH, Elinor Murphy of Newton, NH, Richard Murphy of East Hampstead, NH, Daniel Murphy of Lee, NH, Mary Reval of Jacksonville, FL; and 17 nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, August 25 at 11:00am at St. James Church (Haverhill, MA). Calling hours will also be held on Saturday, August 25 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at Paul Rogers & Sons Funeral Home (Haverhill, MA) and on Sunday, August 26 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm at French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home (Chatham, NY). A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 27 at 11:00am at St. James Parish (Chatham, NY). Burial will follow at St. James Parish Cemetery (Ghent, NY).
