Gladys Marie (Matthews) Schermerhorn, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on January 7, 2018. Born June 23, 1928 in Onslow County, Bear Creek, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Lee Ida Provost and was raised by her loving grandparents, John and Emma (Philips) Matthews. It was here that she met and wed her Marine husband of 61 years, Morton W. Schermerhorn. Gladys was a charter member of the Ghent VFW Auxiliary Post #5933. She was retired from Barnwell Nursing Home where she had worked as a nurse's aide for over 25 years. She was known for her generous heart and open arms to anyone who needed it. She was always patient and kind and we know God will have a special place for her. She enjoyed annual summer vacations in North Carolina with her family, cruises, trips to Disney and a monthly trip to the casino. She is surviced by her 8 children: George & Marilyn Schermerhorn, Joan (Schermerhorn) & William Becker, Kenneth and Deanna Schermerhorn, Gloria Jean (Schermerhorn) & William Satter, Marcia (Schermerhorn) & Nicholas Kulyniak, Rita (Schermerhorn) Akin & John McCagg, Peggy (Schermerhorn) & Mark Meyers Sr. and Morton (Buddy) Schermerhorn, her 16 grandchildren: Heather, Toni, Dawn, Linda, Ronald, Nicole, Kenneth Jr., Jeremy Joshua, Kassia, Heidi, William III, Ashley, Natalie, Jocelyn and Mark Jr. as well as numerous great grandchildren. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Morton W. Schermerhorn, grandson Ronald Czajkowski and son-in-law William E. Akin Jr. A celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, January 10th at noon at the Ghent VFW (on Route 66) for all who wish to attend.
