Obituary

Harold Spenser (Babe) Golden died June 8th at the Pine Haven Nursing Home, after a long illness. He was born in Chatham on February 24, 1923 and was the son of the late Harold and Olive Humeston Golden. Babe spent 6 years in the U.s. Navy, 3 of them aboard the USS North Carolina and the other three on the USS Missouri. He was aboard the Missouri for the signing of the peace treaty that was signed on her deck while in Tokyo Bay. He was honorably discharged as a Machinist 1st. Class in 1945. He spent 17 years on the New York Central Railroad and 35 years in his own business; Golden's Amoco in Chatham. He belonged to the Ghent V.F.W. and the Chatham American Legion. Babe was an avid golfer, a master mechanic, electrician and plumber who could fix anything. He was predeceased by his sister; Edna Westover, brother; Charles Golden and 6 year old grandson; John Boy. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Wilber Golden, his two daughters; Bonnie Lowheit and Roberta (Wayne) Rose both of Chatham, five grandchildren; Donna (Thomas) Herbert of Florida, Peggy Sue Marinaro of Buffalo, Michael (Kelly) Rose of Chatham, Malissa Rose of Latham and Jeremy (Alyssa)Rose of Conn. , his nine great grandchildren; Cynthia and Julia Mariano of Buffalo, Jennifer Herbert of Florida, Michael, Matthew, Kacey and Emily Rose of Chatham and Amelia and Eliza Rose of Conn. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Chatham Rescue Squad or the Chatham Silent Food Pantry. Family will receive friends Wednesday, June 10th. from 6 to 9 pm at the French, Gifford, Preiter and Blasl funeral home, Chatham.
