Hermann Wahlers, 78, of Copake, a devoted woodworker, inventive tinkerer, and beloved father, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2026, at Albany Medical Center. Born on September 10, 1947, in Kolen Ferden, Germany, Hermann's extraordinary journey began early when he immigrated to America just two months after his fifth birthday. Throughout his life, he was characterized by a unique blend of creativity, steadfast determination, and unwavering kindness.
Hermann’s career spanned woodworking and construction, where his hands and mind worked in harmony to craft and build with exceptional skill. His passion for making wooden toys and knives reflected not only his craftsmanship but also his generous spirit. Always the innovator, Hermann was known for his remarkable ability to think outside the box, often inventing clever solutions to problems others found insurmountable. Those closest to him fondly recall his legendary stubbornness—an attribute so distinctive it earned its own moniker, "Hermonisms,"
Beyond his professional pursuits, Hermann was an avid lover of nature and animals, finding joy and solace in the outdoors. Those who knew him cherished his readiness to listen and offer support whenever needed, a quiet strength that provided comfort and reassurance. Even as he faced many health challenges, Hermann maintained the spirit of the young man he was at heart, famously driving around with no floorboards, through cornfields, his resourcefulness undiminished as he fashioned bandages from greasy rags.
Hermann is survived by his devoted daughter, Heather Wahlers, and his cherished daughter-in-law, Slyara Dorresteyn. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Ann (Ford) Wahlers, whose ashes will be scattered alongside his in a small and private ceremony on October Mountain—a place that held special meaning to them both. Also departed are two dear cats who were part of his family, Freckles and Bear.
A small and private celebration of life will be held to honor Hermann’s memory and the legacy of a man who touched lives with his strength, ingenuity, and heart. His spirit endures in the memories of those who loved him and in the countless wooden creations and thoughtful inventions he leaves behind. Hermann Wahlers will be remembered not only for his talents and stubborn will but for the warmth and steadfastness that defined his life.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Jessica M. Cunningham & Robert M. Donaghue, French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham.
