Jane Sawicz Deppe passed away peacefully on December 10, 2011 at the age of 99, in Hudson, NY. Her children Carl Deppe, Janina Deppe and grandchildren Saskia Levy Thompson and Francesca Levy were with her.
Jane was born in Brooklyn in 1912 where she taught elementary school for over 20 years after getting a BA from Brooklyn College in 1933. In 1966 she received her MA from Queens College. During WWII she married Carl Deppe and while he served in the Navy, Jane helped the war effort by working on a dairy farm in Maine and working as a supervisor in the Curtiss Wright propeller factory in Caldwell NJ.
Jane and family first came to Columbia County on vacation in the mid nineteen fifties and later bought a home in Chatham and eventually became full time residents. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Rio, Aster and Stella Thompson and by her sister Elizabeth Sawicz Timmins.
A memorial service is being planned for the beginning of the year.
