Obituary

Joan Ruth Shatney passed away August 31, 2021. Born January 24, 1932 in Poughkeepsie, New York she was the daughter of the late Harris and Ruth Gardner Van Wagenen. She spent her youth growing up in Dutchess County and would later marry Iliff Shatney. They moved to East Chatham in 1965. Joan spent many years leading and assisting the Canaan Seniors Group. She enjoyed bowling in a league at the Chatham Bowl, was a member of E C Methodist Church, Dutch Shoes Square Dancing Club, and was a member and past president of the E. C. Ladies Auxiliary. Joan started a baking career at the Country Kitchen, then onto Stoney Kill Rest. She also worked as a baker at the Cottage Restaurant & Queechy Lake Motel. People came from miles around for her breads and donuts. She was predeceased by her son, Larry, husband, Iliff and her brother Edward. Joan is survived by her sons, Iliff (Wendy) of East Chatham, Barry (Donna) of Nassau and her daughter Carol Hassan of Minot ND, grandchildren, Paul & Jason Shatney, Erlinda Abrahamson, Courtney Powell and Chad Hassan, and five great grandchildren. Calling hours will be Friday September 3rd from 4 to 7pm at the French Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home. Family will be gathering on Saturday at 11am at the East Chatham Methodist Church for funeral services. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be made to the East Chatham Methodist Church P.O. Box 158 East Chatham, NY 12060. Condolences may be conveyed at frenchblasl.com.
