Joanne E. Dixon

Joanne E. Dixon, 85, a lifelong resident of Chatham, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2026, at Albany Medical Center following a brief illness. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and faced its daily challenges with remarkable determination. Though the disease gradually limited her physically, her spirit remained as vibrant as ever. She always wanted to be out enjoying life, spending time with family and friends, and taking part in the activities she loved.

Born on December 20, 1940, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Joanne was the daughter of Kenneth and Mary (Garzone) Every. She graduated from Chatham High School and went on to build a life defined by hard work, devotion to her family, and a deep commitment to her community.

Joanne began her career at NYSEG before spending ten years operating the K&D Bar alongside her beloved husband, George. Together they built more than a successful business—they created a welcoming gathering place while raising four of their five children and forming lifelong friendships throughout the community.

After her years at the K&D Bar, Joanne worked at Bob's Lawn & Garden, where she quickly became Bob's trusted right-hand woman. She later joined MetzWood Insurance in Chatham, where she spent 26 years as receptionist and proudly served as the company's self-proclaimed "Director of First Impressions." Her warm smile, friendly personality, and genuine kindness made everyone who walked through the door feel welcome.

Joanne's longest and perhaps most meaningful career was in public service. From 1975 until her retirement in 2019, she faithfully served both the Village of Chatham and the Town of Ghent as Court Clerk. For more than three decades, she worked side by side with her husband, George, until his passing in 2007. Her professionalism, compassion, and dedication earned the respect of countless judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, and members of the public.

Joanne embraced life with enthusiasm. She loved shopping, dancing, and bringing family and friends together, especially during Chatham Fair week when her home was always filled with laughter, food, and celebration. Music was one of her greatest joys, and she rarely missed an opportunity to dance to favorites such as The Overtones, The Duprees, and the Ghent Band.

Above all else, Joanne treasured her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest happiness came from watching her family grow and creating lasting memories together.

She is survived by her loving children: Kevin Dixon; Ronald (Sandi) Dixon; Shari Franks; Kelly (Nick) Baccaro and Corey (Jodi Munson) Dixon. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Jason and Spencer Franks; Ryan and Matt Gildersleeve; Kenneth and Kayla Dixon; Nicholas Schram; Brandon Baccaro; Lucas Dixon; Olivia (Jerrod) Dixon; and Austin Dixon. She was the proud great-grandmother of Harper, Dax, and Mylie Dixon, and Mercy Gildersleeve.

Joanne is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dr. Margaret Basti and Gertrude Kuhn; her brother-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey Basti; her dear friend, Harvey McCagg; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Kenneth and Mary Every; her beloved husband, George Dixon; and her brother, Kenneth “Butch” Every.

Joanne will be remembered for her warmth, quick wit, generous heart, and unwavering love for her family and community. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and service that will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.

Family and friends are invited to share memories and offer condolences on Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 10:00am till Noon at French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, 25 Railroad Avenue, Chatham. Where a memorial service will be held at Noon, officiated by Rev. Gary Gelfenbien. Inurnment will follow at Chatham Rural Cemetery with a celebration of life following the cemetery service.

Donations in Joanne’s memory may be made to either Chatham Rescue Squad or to the Ghent Band. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff at Columbia Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and Albany Medical Center’s ICU for their kindness, care and support they showed to the family. A special thank you to Bev & Lisa Samsel and Debbie Hotaling, for their help in allowing Joanne to remain home and independent over the last few years.
