Joe Don Clayton, born September 3, 1934, in Sentinel, OK, passed away on April 18, 2009 in New Lebanon, NY. Prior to 2002, he resided in Brooklyn Heights, NY for over 35 years.Mr. Clayton graduated in 1957 from Yale University, with a B.A. in history. Joe was awarded a Keasbey scholarship to attend Oxford University's New College and achieved a Doctorate of Philosophy in 1959. At Oxford, he received The Gladstone Memorial Prize for his doctoral work entitled Gladstone as Parliamentarian. In 1964 he was awarded a LL.B from Yale Law School. Joe practiced corporate law in New York City for 30 years with three law firms: Davis, Polk & Wardwell; Mudge Rose Guthrie & Alexander; and retired from White & Case in 1999.Throughout his life Joe's passion was music. At Yale, Joe was active in many singing groups, including the Whiffenpoofs, a senior year men's a cappella group. In addition, he was President of The Yale Glee Club. Throughout his life he continued to be an active supporter and participant of the arts, particularly musical endeavors. Mr. Clayton is survived by his wife, Denise; three children: Thomas, Katherine, and Andrew; and five grandchildren.The family will initially hold a private ceremony.
