John "Jack" Taylor, 83, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime of laughter, friendship, and fish stories that may or may not have been entirely true.
Born in Hudson, New York, on February 26, 1943, Jack was predeceased by his parents, John and Evelyn (Staats) Taylor and sister, Joan Van Alstyne. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1961.
He served 35 years as the superintendent of the DPW for the Village of Kinderhook, garnering the appreciation and respect of many of the village residents. He was a lifetime member of the Palmer Engine & Hose Co., in Kinderhook. He was also affiliated with the Glencadia Rod & Gun Club and the Kinderhook Lake Association.
Though he served in the Army from 1963 to 1966, he liked to remind people that “the only shots I took in the Army were on the basketball court,” a fitting remark from a lifelong basketball standout.
Jack was known for his sharp wit, and his legendary collection of inappropriate jokes—many of which probably shouldn't be repeated here.
An avid fisherman, Jack was happiest with a rod in his hand, a line in the water, and good company nearby. Whether he was reeling in a big one or just enjoying a Genny on the river, fishing brought him great joy throughout his life.
More than anything, Jack will be remembered for the laughter he brought to others. His sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and ability to brighten a room made him someone people genuinely loved being around.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Lois (Van Alstyne) Taylor; his children, Kyle Taylor and Jackie (Taylor) Mulica, and his grandchildren, Megan Taylor, Evan Mulica and Nolan Mulica.
Family and friends are invited to share memories and offer condolences on Thursday, June 4 from 4:00 to 7:00pm; at French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, 25 Railroad Avenue, Chatham. Where a funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, June 5, followed by interment in the Kinderhook Reformed Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor his memory by making a donation to The Community Hospice, 47 Liberty Street, Catskill 12414 or simply spend time with the people you love, tell a slightly inappropriate joke, and, if possible, cast a line into the water.
Jack will be deeply missed and fondly remembered; one last "Lay down" from JT.
Arrangements are under the guidance of Robert M. Donaghue, French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham.
