Julia Gross of Chatham, passed away January 29, 2014 at Albany Medical Center. Born July 19, 1927 in Canaan, NY, she was the daughter of the late Stanislaw and Mary Mazzar Gawron.
Julia grew up in Canaan attending school there and in New Lebanon. She left school early to help the family by working for General Electric in Pittsfield, MA. . After leaving GE she worked at the England Brothers store in Pittsfield as a receptionist at their hair salon. That is where she met the man should would later marry. On November 20, 1950 she married Robert Gross in St. James Church in Chatham.
They moved to the Wappinger's Falls in the late 1950's to accommodate her husband's job at IBM. After his retirement in December 1981 they would move back to Chatham. Julia enjoyed Cooking and growing her plants and flowers. She also enjoyed her time at their summer home on Kinderhook Lake.
Julia was a long-time member of the Chatham American Legion Post #42 Ladies' Auxiliary, and served as its Chaplain for several years
She is survived her loving husband of 63 years, Robert and by many nieces and nephews.
Julia was predeceased by her siblings, Albert Gawron, Stanley Gawron, Jr., Veronica McCagg, Walter Gawron, Edwin Gawron and Mary Barber.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 4th at the French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home, Chatham, from 4 to 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 5th. at 1pm at Saint James Church, Interment will follow at St. James Cemetery, Ghent, NY.
