Kathryn Barney

Kathryn Barney, 93, passed away peacefully at Pine Haven Nursing Home on August 18, 2026. She was born October 10, 1932, in Torrington, Connecticut, the daughter of Clarence and Ethel (Hunt) Decker. She grew up in Sharon, Connecticut until moving to Millerton with her family at a young age. As a young woman, she found great happiness attending barn dances with her sisters, cherishing those lively times spent together.

Kathryn worked as a housekeeper at the Pleasant Acres Resort in Leeds until her retirement in 1999. Outside of her career, Kathryn’s life was enriched by her love for family gatherings, where she delighted in celebrating and creating memories, especially during parties. She possessed a profound appreciation for the outdoors, finding joy in gardening and the natural beauty of the country setting around her. Her passion for bingo brought her relaxation and camaraderie, and she never missed a chance to join a game with friends.

Kathryn leaves behind her dear niece Lisa Miller, and her children Mason Miller-Gomme & Sierra Shelton (Ed Hidley) who shares in the fond remembrance of Kathryn’s companionship and warmth as they were her caregivers though her later years. She is also survived by many other nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and cousins. Kathryn will be remembered as a steadfast worker, a devoted friend, and a joyful spirit who embraced life’s moments with grace and simplicity.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Donald Decker, Ronald Decker, Gary Decker, and Clarence Decker Jr., as well as her sisters Gail Hart and Phyllis Miller. Each held a special place in her life story.

A time for sharing memories and offering condolences will be held Saturday morning August 29, 2026, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl, located at 25 Railroad Ave, Chatham, NY 12037. A funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Ghent Union Cemetery.
