On the sunny morning of March 20, 2016, Kent"Sock" Rossman passed away peacefully at the Albany Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 81 years old. Kent was born January 6, 1935 to the late Dewitt Rossman and Florence Hapeman Rossman in Hudson, New York and nephew of the late Claude Rossman. He was predeceased by sisters, Alice Johnson and Nyra Sartori.
Mr. Rossman graduated from Philmont High School in 1952. After which time, he signed a professional baseball contract with the Philadelphia Phillies as a pitcher, and played for their farm system. After tenure with the Phillies, he signed with the New York Giants, playing in their farm system.
After baseball he entered the U.S. Army and served in Germany from 1957 thru 1959 in the 11th. Airborne and 24th. Infantry divisions. After service, he became a N.Y. State Trooper and served 22 years, until retiring in 1982. During retirement, Kent owned an excavation business around the Copake Lake area.
On July 27, 1963, in Churchtown, N.Y., he married Dorothy (Miller) Rossman, who predeceased him on December 23, 2012.
He is survived by his daughters Lisa (Mark) Nielsen, Leah (Sala Chnioui) Rossman, Laci Rossman, his son Kent (Tonya Sauca) Rossman Jr., Step-daughter Theresa Hover, Grand-children Meghan Nielsen-Grimaldi, Ethan Nielsen, Chazz Rossman-Chnioui, Step-grandchildren Ryan Hover, and Ashley DeJesus.
He continued to play baseball and softball for many years, playing on teams ranging from Albany to Hudson, VA. and into New England. At 15 years old he became the youngest player to pitch a no-hitter in the Columbia County men's twilight baseball league, and in later years becoming the only player in the history of the Columbia County Twilight baseball league to win the batting title and pitch a no-hitter in the same season.
He belonged to the N.Y. State Retired Troopers Association, and the fraternal order of the Elks, loved baseball history and was a devoted NY Yankee fan.
Special heartfelt thank you to all the doctors and nurses from Albany Medical ICU, especially Kent's nurse Kelly who joined in the family's farewell.
