Obituary

Marion L. Fila, 87, a 55 year resident of Chatham, passed away on September 7th at Providence Care Center in Lennox, MA, where she was recovering from a recent illness. Prior to her illness, she had been a resident at EPOCH at Melbourne assisted living facility in Pittsfield since 2008. She was born in Newburyport, MA and was the second of 10 children born to Charles and Georgianna Campbell. She was a graduate of Newburyport High School, and was married for 56 years to John Fila of Chatham, who predeceased her in 1996. During her many decades in Chatham, she served on the election board for more than 40 years, was a member and past president of the Alter Rosary Society of St. James Catholic Church, a past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America and campaigned tirelessly for the annual fundraisers for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She is survived by 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 5 siblings. Her children are John Fila, of Santa Monica, CA; Frank Fila of Chester, NJ; Nancy Fila of New York, NY and Sandra Fila of Canaan. Her daughter, Susan Fila, predeceased her in 2008. Her 7 grandchildren are Amy Bryant of Old Chatham; Geoffrey Fila of Stamford CT; Adam Hanlon of Schenectady; Nicole and Gregory Daddazio of New York, NY; Sarah Hanlon of Canaan and Katherine Fila of Chester, NJ. Surviving siblings include her brother Robert Campbell of Seabrook NH, and her sisters: Betty Sarbanis of Hampstead NH, Lorraine Merrill , Arlene April and Barbara Merrill of Salisbury MA. She was predeceased by her brothers and sister John Campbell, Charles Campbell, Dorothy Campbell and Edward Campbell. Marion will be remembered by her family and friends for her fiery spirit, her wit and her love of travel and new adventures. Friends may call on Saturday, September 11 at French, Gifford, Preiter and Blasl Funeral home in Chatham from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. James Catholic church in Chatham at 11:00 AM.
