Obituary

Martha Schober (nee Mader), 92, departed this life on January 4, 2013 at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. She was born on July 28, 1920 in New York City to Bernhardt Mader, an immigrant from Germany, and Theresia Mader (nee Geschrey) of Austria Hungary. She spent her childhood in Manhattan and her early adulthood in Rye, New York. She graduated from Rye High School in 1938 and the Fashion School of Design in New York City. The majority of her life was spent living on a farm in Austerlitz, New York. She was married to Henry Schober, an immigrant from Austria, in 1941. Martha and Henry's greatest joy was the arrival of their daughter Gretel in 1943 and their son Hans in 1945. In 1948, Martha, Henry, and the children moved to a small farm in Austerlitz. Henry maintained his job at the Westchester Country Club, traveling to Columbia County on his days off until he moved permanently to the farm in 1958. Martha took the initiative to learn about farming and built a dairy farm of Holstein cows. Henry passed in 1988, and Martha continued to help her son, Hans, and his family manage the farm. She was an election inspector for the town of Austerlitz. She also ran for public office and served her community as a member of the Austerlitz Town Board. Martha was an active member of the Spencertown Presbyterian Church and played an important role in sustaining the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hillsdale, New York. Martha is survived by her daughter Gretel, husband Frank Bachler, and her son Hans, wife Rosemarie Schober. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Paul and Lizette Bachler, Krista and Ken Segreto, Matt and Lisa Schober, David and Tracy Schober, Christopher and Jennifer Schober, Suzanne and Rich Riley, Stephen and Meg Schober, Deborah and Christopher Wren, and Samantha Schober, step great-grandson Anthony Segreto, step great-gransdon Michael and Molly Goodrich, and step great-granddaughter Christine Goodrich, 11 great-grandchildren: Alexandra, Katerina, Paul, Carlo, Kieran, Eowyn, Aoife, Saoirse, Henry, Caleb, and Jack, step great-great grandchildren Alexander and Emily, and nephew Walter, wife Kathy Schober, and children Eric, wife Amy, and Christina Schober.
