Obituary

Mary J. Sherman a lifelong resident of the Ghent/Chatham area died Saturday, September 30, at the Pine Haven Home in Philmont.  She was born January 19, 1910 to John and Elizabeth Kearney Jones Sr. and was a member of Chatham's' 1927 graduating class. After school she went to work for the New York Central Railroad for a short time in Buffalo, New York.  She married Harry E. Sherman in June of 1934 at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Church in New Lebanon, New York.  Mrs. Sherman worked as a clerk for the Chatham Area Auction.  She loved baseball and the Brooklyn Dodgers, was an avid bowler and was the first women inducted to the Columbia County Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. Survivors include 2 sons; James C. (Marie) Sherman of Claverack and H. Douglas (HollY)Sherman of Manchester, VT. her daughter; Mrs. Joan (George) Simard of Hillsdale, her 2 sisters; Mrs. Jeanette (Franklin) Fiero, East Chatham, Mrs. Edna (Nancy) Knabbe, Ghent, her two brothers; Robert Jones of  PA and William Jones of  Ghent, her eight grandchildren; Mark Sherman, Jay Sherman, Jon Sherman, Adam Sherman, Dawn Bucci, Kelly Strobel, Stacey Funk and Jaime Sherman, 12 great Grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband in 1982 and siblings; Dorothy Bleadow, Florence Blizzard, Thomas Jones, Paul K. Jones, Carolyn Jones, Margaret Miller, Ruth Cooney and John Jones Jr. Calling hours will be Tuesday October 3rd. at The French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl Funeral Home 25 Railroad Avenue, Chatham, from 5 to 8pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday October 4th. by the Reverend Gary Gelfenbien at Saint James Church, Chatham, at 10 am. Interment will follow at the Ghent Union Cemetery.In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory, payable to the Chatham Alumni Association, for Mary Sherman Scholarship, PO Box 208, Chatham, New York, 12037.
