Obituary

Mary C. (Marion) Torrey of Chatham died peacefully on December 2nd at the age of 95 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, NY.  One of nine siblings, she was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 1, 1918 to James and Catherine Wallace.    She was predeceased by her husband Edward Torrey,  all 8 of her siblings,  her daughter Abbe Berkel, her grandson Jeffrey Berkel, and granddaughter Kaitlin Torrey.  She is survived by her sons Martin (Chris Mesick) and Matthew (Debra Weaver), grandchildren Brian Berkel, Jessica (Berkel) Salvatore, Barry Torrey, Adam Torrey, Samantha Torrey, and 6 great grandchildren. In 1945 Marion and Ed moved to Columbia County from Brooklyn.  Marion became a devoted communicant of St James Roman Catholic Church in Chatham, where she began working for Monsignor Charles McCormick in 1964, to assist on a weekend, and then remained employed there for the next 36 years, working in various capacities including Secretary.  Over the course of her years living in Chatham and Ghent, Marion participated in numerous volunteer organizations including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, the March of Dimes, St James Catholic Daughters of America, The Altar Rosary Society, etc.  Throughout much of the 1960's one of her great joys was the weekly bowling leagues at the Chatham Bowl.  An inspirational lady of quick wit, compassion for others, and a deep devotion to her family and Church, Marion will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends. Calling hours will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Thursday December 5th ` at the French, Gifford, Preiter and Blasl Funeral Home at 25 Railroad Avenue, Chatham.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday December 6th at 10:00 AM at St James Roman Catholic Church, followed by a committal service at St James Cemetery in Ghent.   Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in her name to The Children's Hospital at Albany Medical Center.
