Obituary

PATTI UNDERWOOD AYDT, March 6, 1926-February 7, 2016               Patti Underwood Aydt, 89, died Sunday February 7 of natural causes at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, New York.              The daughter of Fred and Percye (Ann) Underwood, she was born March 6, 1926 in Heath, Texas. A lifelong resident of North Central Texas, in the last year of her life she made an adventurous cross country move to join family members in the Northeast. She was a resident of the Payn Foundation Home in Chatham, New York, a community she loved.             Mrs. Aydt was a graduate of Adamson High School in Dallas, Texas and attended Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, until World War II intervened and she left school to take a federal job. In 1946, she married Charles William Aydt, a native of Long Island, New York and a combat Marine veteran who had served in the South Pacific.             She and her husband and parents were self-employed fashion wholesalers who had showrooms in the early Dallas Merchandise Mart, then later became charter leaseholders in the new Dallas Apparel Mart, a futuristic building that was used as a location for the film Logan's Run. Her career spanned the early years of fashion merchandising, before the advent of "big box" stores, and she and her family served children's boutique shops and department stores in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas and Louisiana. She particularly loved Fashion Week in New York City and the Southwestern regional markets.             She was deeply involved in community volunteerism, and with her husband, became the first wife-and-husband Girl Scout leadership team in Texas. The Aydts also were charter members of the Church of the Good Shepherd Methodist in Arlington, which they had the honor of naming. In retirement, she used her marketing skills to co-found a nonprofit shop in the Arlington, Texas History Museum.             Following her move to New York, she had the opportunity to explore many historical sites in the area, and particularly loved taking long drives in the Berkshires during foliage season.             Mrs. Aydt is survived by her daughter Deborah Aydt Marinelli and son-in-law Lorenzo Marinelli of Niverville, New York; son Charles Steven Aydt of Dallas, Texas, and daughter Patti Aydt Britton of Ft. Worth, Texas. She is also survived by grandchildren Rachel Aydt and Christian Aydt of Manhattan and Lori Fielding Knowles of Ft. Worth, Texas, and great-grandson James J. Burton V of Manhattan.             Arrangements were handled by French, Gifford, Preiter & Blasl of Chatham, New York. A private cremation was held on Ash Wednesday at the Albany Rural Cemetery. Interment of ashes and memorial service will be held at a later date at Moore Funeral Home's Valor Garden in Arlington, Texas.
