Sheila Simmons McCagg of Hudson - It is with deep sadness that we announce her passing on May 19, 2022 following a lengthy struggle with the life-altering and devastating Alzheimer's Disease.
Sheila was born on June 26, 1947 to John (Jack) and Edith (Drobner) Simmons in Hudson, New York. She was a 1965 graduate of St. Mary's Academy, Hudson, New York and the following year from Albany Business College as an Executive Secretary.
In 1970 she married the love of her life, Harvey J. McCagg of Chatham, with whom they shared more than 51 years of a happy and exciting life together. In 1972 they were blessed by having a son, Michael Anthony McCagg and enjoyed life even more than she could have imagined.
A consummate conversationalist , Sheila liked to say she was "shy," but was outgoingly social – with a gift of gab and a bubbly personality -- whether with family, friends or strangers.
With her infectious smile and bubbly personality, she frequently initiated conversations with strangers in shopping lines, restaurants and any public place by commenting on their clothing, hair, jewelry, children or whatever struck her fancy, always offering a complimentary or favorable remark. She believed an unsolicited compliment made people feel good – if only briefly -- and she enjoyed doing so.
Her love of family, especially son and daughter-in-law Alicia Feller McCagg, and her "precious" grandchildren, Connor and Kayleigh McCagg, who she adored and never missed an opportunity to bend someone's ear with stories about them.
Her life's pleasures included singing and dancing and was a member for many years of local church choirs, as well as the Philmont Community Choir. She was a longtime member of American Legion Post 42 Ladies Auxiliary.
In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by a brother, Daryl and wife Sue Simmons of East Lyme, CT., sisters-in-laws, Barbara Friedel of Castleton and Judy Simmons of Port Orange, FL., brothers-in-laws Ralph (Nancy) McCagg of Kinderhook and Paul McCagg of Hudson; and a number of nephews and nieces.
Prior to her retirement, Sheila served 30 years with the Columbia County Treasurer's Office. She also spent a number of years as a legal secretary for attorneys in Hudson and Albany – a career she relished.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to the Community Hospice, 28 Liberty St., Catskill, NY 12414 or the Alzheimer's Association, Northeastern New York Chapter, 1003 New London Road, Cohoes, NY 12047.
