Obituary

Victoria Morss of Austerlitz, died May 6th. at her home. She was born March 22, 1943 and lived in San Francisco and Berkeley, California.  She attended public school and the University of California at Berkeley, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in economic history at University College, London, where she studied the African slave trade. Her major career was in evaluation of development, first with the U.S. State Department and then with the USAID Bereau of Mangement.  She traveled widely and was keenly interested in the socioeconomic development of various countries.  She was an expert of Chinese porcelains and co-founder and manager of the Center for Oriental Art, London, during which years she wrote a book on porcelains. She coauthored and edited five other books. Reading was her passion. She was particularly interested in Burma where she and her former husband, Elliott Morss, lived at intervals.  She is survived but her brother, Richard Gardener of Bellingham, Washington. A memorial celebration of her life takes place at the Canaan Congregational Church, Route 295 and County Route 5, Saturday, May 17 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Cyclone Nargis Relief Fund, c/o Cetana Educational Foundation, 90 Mount Lucas Road, Princeton, New Jersey 08540, or to any of the other NGO's working on hurricane relief.
