Virginia (Ginny) Carol Campbell Austen, age 87, long time resident of Canaan, passed away on March 26, 2007, following a long illness. Born in New York City on April 16, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Caroline Weber and Clinton Campbell of 21 Archer Avenue, White Plains, NY. She was a graduate of White Plains High School and worked briefly as a secretary for McGraw Hill Publishers in NYC. She is survived by her daughter, Diane of Canaan, NY, her son Robert of Pittsfield, MA and a niece. She was predecease by her brother Clinton Campbell. Ginny was married on July18, 1942, in White Plains, NY to the late Richard Groat Austen who died on June 4, 2002. Ginny extended herself to others through charities, social causes, church work and by helping her neighbors in need. A homemaker for most of her life, Ginny was also an accomplished artist, embroiderer, baker and gardener. She was a member and former deaconess of the Canaan Congregational Church. She was a member of many organizations, often serving in positions ranging from secretary to president, including the Canaan Historical Society, Women's Club, PTA, Lebanon Valley Garden Club, Cornell University's Cooperative Extension, the Audubon Society of Old Chatham and the Canaan Congregational Church's Women's Fellowship. She was a supporter of environmental conservation, civil rights and the performing arts. Ginny was a bright woman who continued to grow all her life. Ginny is lovingly remembered for her wit, strength, independence, sincerity, and kind generosity. All are invited to her funeral which will be held at the Canaan Congregational Church in Canaan, NY on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 11am, and to a luncheon/reception celebrating Ginny's life at her home following the service.
