Scannell
February 14, 1935 – October 23, 2024
William J. "Bill" Scannell passed away at home on October 23, 2024, at the age of 89.
Born February 14, 1935 in Manhattan to Ignatius Aloysius and Helen Rayder Scannell, Bill lived in Brooklyn, NY, until age 9, when the family moved to Ghent, NY. He graduated from Chatham High School in 1955. He was a catcher on the baseball team, serving as captain. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army from 1955-57, serving in the 11th Airborne Division. He made 9 jumps, including a Christmas Eve night jump. He was stationed in West Germany and was very proud of his military service.
Following his honorable discharge as PFC, he married his lifelong love, Marcia Rae Wooley. They recently celebrated their 67th anniversary.
Bill was a journeyman pressman, working at times for the Hudson Register Star, Clarity Publishing, and the Chatham Press.
A devout Catholic, he was an 80 year communicant at St. James Parish in Chatham, NY. Bill took great comfort in his faith and it served as the foundation of his life as a friend and good will ambassador to all.
Bill was a dedicated Brooklyn Dodger fan, adopting the New York Yankees when the "Bums" moved to Los Angeles. He loved feeding the birds, his beautiful country yard, his Farmall Super MTA tractor, and especially time spent with his family.
In addition to his wife Marcia, Bill is survived by his children, Stephen Scannell (Carrie Sacco), Colleen Dodge (Dennis), Gregory Scannell (Chisako), Chris Scannell (Dawn), William M. Scannell, Carolyn Falconer, and Stephanie Donnelly (Kevin). He warmly welcomed Tai Hammarlof (Pam) into the family.
He loved his grandchildren, Will, Evan, Stewart, Spencer, Aiko, Wade, Ellis, Noah, Aaron, Kirk, Samantha, Sara, Erika, Shannon, and Brennan, and his great grandchildren Sonny, Holly, Vaughn, Everett, Maya and Leo.
