Obituary

William Martin Bither Sr, 96, of 329 Pittsfield Rd., Lenox, died on Saturday, May 7 at the home of (late William) and Carrie Bither in Canaan, NY.  Bill was born in Canaan on November 24, 1914, son of Henry D and Grace Schilling Bither.  He was a long-time Canaan resident. He was a graduate of Chatham High School and attended New York University until he left to join the US Navy from 1942 until 1945. He served as a machinist during the war. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betsy Moore, and daughters Janet Canfield of Watkins Glen, NY, and Jeanne Siemer of Anaheim Hills, CA. He is also survived by daughter-in-law Carrie Bither of Canaan. He is predeceased by son William M Bither II and sister Helen Hoffman.  He leaves a sister Laura B. Steidel of Ft. Myers, Fl.  He also leaves grandchildren William M (Kimberly) Bither of Southampton, MA., David Bither (Odessa) of Roulette, PA., Joy Crane (Joe) and Kristen (Derek) Bacon of Watkins Glen., Nicole Siemer of Anaheim Hills, CA. , and  nieces, Diane Kline of New Lebanon , Susan Hall of Canaan, Alberta Steidel  and nephew Arthur Steidel of Florida. He also leaves great grandchildren Abriana Grace and Alexander Hayden Bither, James Philip and Luke William Bither, Gabrielle Christine Crane and Isabella Alina Bacon. Bill joined the US Postal Service as mail carrier in 1956 until his retirement in the 1980's. His previous employment included  Berkshire Farm Center and  the former Tennessee Gas Corp.  He was a member of the Canaan Congregational Church and served as President of the Canaan Cemetery Association for many years. There are no calling hours. There will be a graveside service at Canaan Cemetery at 1:00 pm, on Tuesday May 10th, presided by Rev. Mark Longhurst.
