William R. Van Ness (Uncle Bill) was called from labor to rest on April 27, 2017 at Columbia Memorial Hospital. Uncle Bill was born July 17, 1927. He was the son of William and Cora Van Ness.
Uncle Bill loved his family and paid special attention to the needs of his mother. His mother took him hand in hand up the hill to Payne AME Church when he was a youngster. There he dedicated his life to the Lord and never wavered. "Train Up A Child" was evident by the role model Uncle Bill set for many.
Uncle Bill attended Chatham Central School and served in the United States Army. Following his service to his country Uncle Bill Continued to keep a close watch over his family.
Uncle Bill held various jobs in New York City and locally. Upon his return to the area he was employed by the Water and Soil Conservation Dept., from which he retired. Still armed with the need to be of service, Uncle Bill drove and delivered "Meals on Wheels" a number of years where he brightened the days of all he encountered.
At Payne Uncle Bill served as Steward, choir member and did whatever was needed in the church. At State Street AME Zion he served as Pastor's Steward for several Pastors.
Upon his return to Payne Uncle Bill picked up the mantle and continued his steadfast work in the church. He also served as part of the Prison Ministry at Hudson Correctional Facility. He was the Steward Emeritus after serving on the Steward Board many many years. He was known as Payne's soloist. His favorite song: "In Loving Kindness".
God truly has been the center of Uncle Bill's life as seen by his service to his church. He gave his time, his talent and his treasures.
Uncle Bill is survived by his loving wife, Selma for 33 years and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Bradford. Uncle Bill opened his home and heart to five nieces and nephews: Thelma Dutton, Lucille Thompson, Rosalie Richardson, Donald and Richard Andrews.
Uncle Bill also leaves in-laws: Rose Marie Whiteside, Mary Whiteside and Aunt Eileen Hunt.
Uncle Bill was predeceased by his siblings: Donald and Charles Van Ness, Mars. Mary Louise Van Alstyne Grimes, Mrs. Shirley Johnson, Mrs. Harriette Brito, Mrs. Carrie Benson, Mrs. Jeanette Grimes and his Aunt Laura Jackson.
Uncle Bill leaves a large host of nieces, nephews, and friends whom he loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held at Payne AME Church on May 4, 2017 at 11am.Repast to follow at the Chatham Fire House.
